Overview

Gemini is a US-based cryptocurrency exchange and custodian founded in 2014 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. The exchange has carved out a niche as the most security-focused platform in the industry, being one of the first to achieve SOC 2 Type 2 certification -- the same security audit standard used by major financial institutions.

Gemini obtained a MAS license to operate in Singapore, providing local investors with access to their security-first platform. The exchange offers over 100 cryptocurrencies, a clean mobile app, and their Gemini Earn program for passive income. However, Gemini does not support PayNow deposits, which is a notable inconvenience for Singapore users who have grown accustomed to instant, free deposits on platforms like Coinhako.

Gemini's biggest selling point is its insurance coverage on custodial holdings. This means that if the exchange is hacked and customer funds are stolen, Gemini's insurance policy covers the losses. While MAS regulations require fund segregation, insurance adds an extra safety layer that few other exchanges offer.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • - SOC 2 Type 2 certified security
  • - Insurance on custodial crypto assets
  • - MAS licensed for Singapore
  • - Clean, intuitive mobile app
  • - Gemini Earn passive income
  • - 100+ supported cryptocurrencies

Cons

  • - No PayNow deposit support
  • - Higher fees on convenience trades (up to 1.49%)
  • - Limited SGD direct deposit options
  • - Fewer coins than Crypto.com (100 vs 350+)
  • - ActiveTrader needed for competitive fees
  • - US-focused platform -- SG features lag

Fee Structure

Gemini has two fee structures. The simple buy/sell interface charges up to 1.49% per transaction -- quite expensive. The ActiveTrader platform offers much more competitive rates: 0.20% taker and 0.10% maker fees, with volume discounts available. For Singapore investors, always use ActiveTrader to avoid overpaying on fees.

Deposits via bank transfer are free but take 1-3 business days. Debit card purchases incur a 3.49% fee. Without PayNow support, the deposit experience is less convenient than Coinhako or Independent Reserve.

Who Should Use Gemini?

Gemini is ideal for security-conscious investors who prioritize insurance coverage and institutional-grade protection over convenience. If you hold large amounts of crypto on an exchange (rather than in a hardware wallet), Gemini's insurance gives you extra peace of mind. For everyday buying with PayNow, however, Coinhako or Independent Reserve are more convenient options.
